On a chilly spring afternoon, there is almost nothing I would rather eat than a hot cross bun, a wave of salted butter melting into a golden pool on its freshly toasted surface. The scent of warm cinnamon and nutmeg, of candied peel and sultanas, is both homely and reassuring. You can keep your tasting menus. Just pass the buns, please.
