“Is everything OK? You haven’t photographed your food” runs the Spectator cartoon. Among my diaries are sets of almost invisible Polaroids glued to crackling pages with yellowing Sellotape. A ghostly aide-memoir of restaurant dishes enjoyed or of the recipe scribbled at their side.

Instagram is the modern-day Polaroid, the snapshot to remind us of food eaten, tables shared, good times had. Except Instagrams are not meant for ourselves alone. Like food, these pictures exist to be shared. Looking through my own account (@thenigelslater) the pictures from this year remind me not only of everything I have cooked for this paper, but the food I ate on trips to Japan, Finland and Denmark.
